Women’s Basketball Drops to Navy in Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – It was turnovers that sunk American women's basketball in its game against Navy on Wednesday night. The teams were square through the first period and separated by just six at the halftime break, but the Mids surged ahead in the second half to claim a dominant 88-60 victory over the Eagles in Alumni Hall.

Inside the Box Score
  • Freshman guard Molly Driscoll led all Eagles with 22 points, her highest total since her prolific game against Winthrop in November when she dropped 24. The first year shot 10-of-15 from the floor and had three rebounds.
  • Cecilia Kay (11) was AU's second leading scorer on the night. Kay grabbed another double-double as well with 11 boards. She led all players on the hardwood in rebounding. Despite that, as a team Navy led American 41-37 in rebounding.
  • The Mids had three players in double digits, led by Mary Gibbons with 23 and Zanai Barnett-Gay had 17. Barnett-Gay also had five rebounds and three steals.
  • Each team shooting an even 45 percent, it was chances and turnovers did American in. The Mids took 69 shots to AU 51 and the Eagles mishandled the ball 26 times while Navy kept it to 13 turnovers.
  • Laura Nogues and Elizabeth Archer fouled out of the game for American while Ivy Bales finished with four fouls. Navy had two players, Maren Louridas and Morgan Demos, who each finished with four fouls.
How it Happened
  • It was a first collegiate start for Archer and Salazar who, alongside Anna Rescifina, Kay, and Driscoll were the starting five for the Eagles. In the first three minutes Navy had racked up eight points to American's four, all four for AU coming from Driscoll at the 7:32 mark.
  • It became a back and forth game, neither team successful in getting defensive stops. The Mids would score and then the Eagles, it was locked at 8-all, then 10-all, and again at 12-all was the scoreline at the media timeout with 3:51 to play in the first quarter.
  • Driscoll had eight points, while Rescifina had tallied four in the opening half of one.
  • The Eagles went ahead, 17-15, on a layup from Koepke with two and a half to play and held that until there were ten seconds left in the first when Navy tied it all up at 19-all.
  • Salazar earned the first triple of the game for American to open the second quarter with a fade away jumper from the wing.
  • The Mids retook the lead though, coming back from a, 24-21, three point deficit a little over a minute into the second quarter and going on an 8-2 run to lead 31-24 with 4:24 to play before the halftime break. Gibbons scored a three point jumper at the end of the run and had accumulated 9 points at that point.
  • Navy then went 2-of-12 from the floor in shooting for the remainder of the half, stunted in scoring while AU battled to stay in it. At the break, American was down six, 38-32.
  • The Eagles, through the first half, had shot 52 percent from the floor to Navy's 40 percent. Navy was taking every opportunity though, having 43 first half shot attempts to American's 23.
  • With the help of three AU turnovers, the Mids went on a 7-0 run to lead 45-36 at the 7:25 mark of the third quarter. Barnett-Gay grabbing four of those points.
  • With 3:53 to play before the fourth, with a media timeout breaking up the action, Navy was outscoring AU 14-9 in the period, extending their lead into double digits, leading 52-41.
  • Coming out of the third period media timeout, the momentum shifted all Navy. The Mids went on to score 11 more points to AU's three rounding out the period up 63-44 over American. The Eagles committed nine turnovers in the 10-minute block.
  • Navy maintained their momentum in the final period, and American went on an 0-of-6 scoring drought to aid in the Mids starting the period on a 12-8 scoring advantage through the midway point of the quarter and held on for a dominant 25-16 final period difference.
  • The Mids topped American 88-60 in Annapolis. The Eagles have two games left in the regular season.
