WASHINGTON - Narrow losses hurt the American University wrestling team on Friday night against Maryland, as the Eagles lost three matches by three points or less, including two with decisive challenges, and one in overtime. Freshman
Cameron Milheim picked up his first dual win to highlight the evening, along with victories from
JJ Peace and
Emmanuel Ulrich.
Notable
- The dual started at 285, and Ulrich jumped on Oscar Williams with a quick takedown and four nearfall points in the first period. He suffered a takedown in the third period, but stayed in control of the bout and won it 8-5.
- Peace provided a spark at 125, battling with Abram Cline in a scramble to earn a reversal in the second period.
- Cline responded with a reversal of his own in the third, but Peace pulled off an escape and an emphatic takedown. The sophomore bounced off a low shot from Cline, pounced to his feet, and took him down from behind to make the score 7-3 and get the win.
- After a Braxton Brown pin at 133, Colin Martin lost a tight match at 141 to #29 Dario Lemus.
- The freshman trailed 8-4 in the final seconds and appeared to gain control on top of Lemus, earning a takedown that tied the match with riding time. After a review, the officials determined that Martin never gained control and reversed the call, giving Lemus the 8-5 win.
- Milheim wrestled a composed match at 157, taking a 3-1 lead over Mekhi Neal in the first period and never letting it go. He added an escape in the second period, and delivered a textbook shot in the third to make the score 7-3 and seal the win.
- Austin Craft's match against AJ Rodrigues at 165 had a similar outcome, with Craft trailing 4-2 late in the third period and fighting to get on top of a long scramble. No takedown was given, but head coach Jason Borrelli challenged through the challenge brick. It was determined that Craft didn't have control, leaving Rodrigues with a 4-2 victory.
- At 184, RJ Robinson went into sudden victory with Seth Digby after both wrestlers scored an escape. Digby came up with a takedown early in the extra period to get the win.
- The Eagles are now 2-4 in their dual schedule.
