Eagles Nearly Complete Comeback from 24 Points Down

PHILADELPHIA – Trailing by as many as 24 points in the second half, the Eagles mounted a near comeback effort, pulling back within four before eventually dropping, 55-48, on the road at Drexel.

Inside the Box Score
  • Charlotte Tuhy struggled to get started offensively, but the freshman forward managed to pull down 15 rebounds to lead all players on the floor for her fifth double-double of the season. After her slow start, she managed to finish the night with 12 points to lead the Eagles on both ends. Tuhy's 15 rebounds are a new career-high.
  • At the conclusion of the game, Tuhy and her 83 rebounds on the season, were good enough for seventh in the NCAA country.
  • Lexi Salazar, shooting 2-for-3 from three point range, tallied eight points, coming in clutch as the game came down to the wire.
  • Ellie Pingree, playing her first game back for the Eagles after an injury in January kept her off the court, shot 3-of-4 from the floor for seven points and pulled down two rebounds. She was matched by Madisyn Moore-Nicholson with her seven points.
  • Amaris Baker had another prolific night for the Dragons, surpassing her season average of 20.9 points per game with 20 total on the night. Drexel was led on the boards by former Eagle, Molly Lavin with nine rebounds.
  • American trailed in rebounding, 47-33, and although each team turned the ball over 12 times, Drexel had the 13-7 advantage in scoring off those turnovers.
How it Happened
  • Drexel's Baker tallied the first points of the evening, starting the scoring for the Dragons. It wasn't until the 7:35 mark that the Eagles got on the board with a driving layup from Moore-Nicholson.
  • After AU grabbed their points, the Dragons hopped out to a 7-2 lead with five to play in the opening frame. American continued to struggle offensively in the first, opening shooting 1-for-10 from the floor, down 11-2 with 2:25 to play.
  • It wasn't until the 1:12 mark that AU grabbed some more points, Tuhy sinking a layup before Pingree earned her first points of the season; AU down 18-6 through one. AU closed out the first shooting 20.0 percent to Drexel's 40.0.
  • Getting outrebounded 23-10, American was struggling on transition defense, letting the home team jump out to a 27-11 lead with 4:41 to go until the locker room break.
  • Baker has seven points while both Lavin and Evans had six rebounds each for Drexel. Tuhy had half of AU's 10 rebounds.
  • American put in a big lineup with just one guard on the floor–Driscoll–for the final 1:16 of the half, hoping to combat the Dragon's length on the court. AU trailed 37-15 through the first half of play.
  • To open the back half, it was rough going offensively with both teams each only scoring four points through the opening 4:28 of play, two of Drexel's points coming from Baker at the charity stripe.
  • Cutting into the lead, the Eagles had back-to-back three point baskets from Pingree and Anna Rescifina to close out the third period, putting the Eagles down 45-32, the smallest deficit of the second half.
  • It kept getting better for the AU with a three from Salazar with 4:52 to play had the Eagles down seven at 48-41, the narrowest margin of the night.
  • Three of four free throws from Salazar and Tuhy down the line brought American down to just five, 49-44, with 2:09 to play for. Another Tuhy point from the free throw line made it a four point game, American down 49-45 with 56.5 to go.
  • The home team would end up holding the Eagles off in a game that would come down to free-throws and timeout. Across last minute of play, the Eagles scored 10 points, seven from the floor, while the Dragons scored four, two of which came from the floor. It would be just enough to hold American off and claim the victory over AU, 55-48.
