BROOKLYN – The contest would remain within comeback distance until the final five minutes, but LIU outpaced American University women's basketball early and held onto the lead the entire game, defeating the Eagles, 69-55, on Thursday night in Brooklyn.
Inside the Box Score
- Molly Driscoll would top all players on the court with her 18 points at the end of the night, tying her season high. She also tied her season high of four rebounds and added two assists and two steals to the campaign.
- Charlotte Tuhy and Elizabeth Archer had successful outings with 10 and eight points respectively. Tuhy led the Eagles on the glass with nine rebounds, one shy of earning her third double-double of the season.
- The teams were relatively equal in turnovers, 15 for LIU and 17 for AU, and fouls 10 for LIU and 12 for AU, but the Sharks capitalized and scored 23 to the Eagles' 14 points off turnovers.
- LIU would end up shooting 44.6 percent from the floor while holding the Eagles to 39.7, although neither team shot well from distance, the Sharks 25.9 percent from three point range while AU shot 22.2 percent.
How it Happened
- The Sharks grabbed the first four points of the contest before the Eagles got themselves back on the board by way of triple from Lexi Salazar. LIU opened the contest on an 11-3 run until 5:46 when the Eagles called a timeout.
- AU would grind back to being down four, 11-7, for a two possession game, but the Sharks kept the intensity, building a 21-9 lead with 90 seconds to play in the opening quarter.
- American, with four points from Driscoll and a three pointer from Tuhy, would be down just five at the end of the first. Rescifina would complete a three point play when fouled on a layup to bring the deficit down to two for America, 23-21, within the first two minutes of the second period.
- Five minutes to go until the halftime break, AU was back to being down two, 30-28. Driscoll and LIU's Kandida Toure each led their teams with eight points apiece.
- The Sharks pulled ahead again, but it was again brought back to a two point game. With two minutes to go a three from Driscoll would look to shift momentum, but LIU would make it a five point game, up 37-32, with a long range jumper as the clock would down.
- Driscoll led all players on the court with 11 on 5-for-9 shooting at the break; the Eagles went 43 percent from the floor in the first half while LIU went 52 percent.
- Midway through the third, American would still be hanging just shallow of LIU's 43 points, with 40 of their own. Driscoll and Kayla Greyvensteyn would have a pair of threes and a driving layup from Charlotte Tuhy were the source of AU's eight points to open the quarter.
- The third would be the lowest scoring quarter for American with 13, and LIU would tie its second quarter tally of 16 to lead by seven, 53-45.
- American would find themselves down nine, with the score 62-53, with four minutes left on the clock. The Sharks only outscored the Eagles 9-8 in the first six minutes of the final frame, but it would be enough to keep the Eagles at bay and prevent a possible comeback.
- Ultimately, the Sharks would end the contest on a 14-2 run over the final 6:36 of the game, taking the victory over American 69-55.
