PHILADELPHIA – Despite a prolific outing from sophomore guard
Molly Driscoll with a career-high 29 points, the Eagles of American University women's basketball were topped 72-61 by La Salle in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon.
Inside the Box Score
- Driscoll's new career high of 29 came as she matched her career high of five three pointers in a single contest. She ended the night on 9-for-15 shooting overall and 5-for-9 from three-point range. She went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
- Another game staple was Charlotte Tuhy on the glass; the freshman had 14 rebounds on the afternoon for a career high defensive effort. Lexi Salazar had a career-high nine boards as well. Tuhy picked up a double-double, her third of the year, with 10 points.
- La Salle's more balanced approach to scoring is what carried the Explorers to victory, with three players in double-digits, led by Joan Quinn with 20 points and six players scoring more than one basket.
- The Explorers picked up 12 steals in the game, but the Eagles topped them 18-13 in points off turnovers; they did win the second-chance points battle 17-8.
How it Happened
- The Eagles were the first on the board, courtesy of a Driscoll layup, and a back and forth would ensue but the game would be knotted 8-all at the first media timeout at the 4:20 mark.
- Driscoll would have five points through the first, leading the charge offensively for AU while Tuhy would be dominating both squads on the glass with five rebounds. The Eagles would be keeping in it, down 12-11 through one.
- There was a scoreless period in the top half of the second, neither team sinking a field goal for over three minutes without a basket, the score holding with La Salle up 15-14.
- Back-to-back threes from the Explorers would break the stalemate and give them a seven points 21-14 lead with 4:33 to go in the half. Tuhy had grabbed her eighth defensive and 10th rebound overall by this point in the contest.
- The Eagles led on the glass 22-17 with 2:02 to play, but American was still on a scoreless drought, kept from a bucket for over seven minutes while the Explorers went on an 8-0 run to lead 23-14.
- The drought would be broken by a Rescifina layup and a Driscoll jump shot, but American would still go into halftime down, 27-18, courtesy of a buzzer beating three from the Explorers' Ivona Miljanic.
- American went on a 6-2 run to open the second half thanks to two three-pointers from Driscoll who had 16 points already and was 4-for-7 from three point range, one shy of her career-high made threes in a game.
- Driscoll would collect 10 points in the first six minutes of the second half, her 20 points doubling the highs of any other player on the court. The team would be back within six, down 37-31, with four minutes to play in the penultimate frame.
- Despite Driscoll's 15 points in the third period, American was outscored 24-18 in the third period and found itself down 51-36 with one frame to go.
- The fourth period started low scoring for both teams, with AU collecting eight and LSU nine halfway through.
- The Eagles would end up outscoring the Explorers 22-18 in the fourth, thanks to a collective effort from five players after AU started the final period with only three players in scoring position.
