ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior
Raymond Lopez won four bouts on the way to a first place finish at the Navy Classic at 133 pounds for American University wrestling on Sunday afternoon, highlighted by a victory over #5 Jacob Van Dee in the semifinal round by fall. Four other AU wrestlers placed in an impressive day for the Eagles, with
Maximilian Leete (133) taking second place,
Caleb Campos (184) and
JJ Peace (125) finishing in third, and
Emmanuel Ulrich (285) in fourth.
Notable
- Lopez came from behind to earn his first win of the day over Navy's Brendan Ferretti in the round of 16. He trailed 6-2 in the second period, then came up with a takedown. In the third period, he scored an escape and added one more take down to seal the win.
- After a major decision in the quarterfinals, Lopez found himself behind Van Dee in the semifinals 9-5. With just 25 seconds remaining in the third period, he got Van Dee's shoulders down for the pin.
- On the other side of the 133-pound bracket, Leete recorded a major decision, pin, and 5-4 decision over Pittsburgh's Evan Tallmadge to reach the finals and face off with his teammate.
- It was a tight bout between the two Eagles, with Lopez leading 4-1 in the third period before Leete injury defaulted with just over a minute remaining, giving Lopez the win.
- Peace won three close matches on the day, including a 7-5 win over Pittsburgh's Colyn Limbert that required two overtime periods.
- Campos dominated in his first two bouts, taking two major decisions. He handled #32 William Ebert of Binghamton with an 11-4 decision in the third place match, recording three takedowns.
- Ulrich's two wins came via decision, defeating Nebraska's Harley Andrews 8-6, and Bucknell's Riley Godek 4-2. He had a seven-point third period against Andrews, scoring a takedown, three nearfall points, and escape to get the win.
