Women’s Basketball Falls in Gritty Game Against Delaware

WASHINGTON – Behind a prolific first half from Madisyn Moore-Nicholson, the contest between American University women's basketball and Delaware was tied at 30-all at halftime, but the Eagles were unable to fight their way back to the top after falling behind in the third period and ultimately fell, 68-57, to the visiting Fightin' Blue Hens.

Inside the Box Score
  • Sophomore Moore-Nicholson led all players on the court with a 20-point career-high night. The guard went 3-for-6 from three point range and added two rebounds, two assists, and two steals on the night.
  • Molly Driscoll and Charlotte Tuhy had solid offensive nights as well, both ending in double-digits. Driscoll dropped 15 points while Tuhy earned her second collegiate double-double in three games with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Tuhy also picked up two blocks.
  • Four Blue Hens ending the game with double digits; Kailah Correa led the charge for the Hens with 18 points. Lay Fantroy led all players on the court on the boards with a total 20 rebounds.
How it Happened
  • Delaware won the tip off and started the game up 4-0. A three pointer from Moore-Nicholson cut into the visitor's efforts, but two early AU turnovers in the first three minutes led to four UD points, and the Eagles were down 11-3 at the midway point of the first.
  • At the end of the first period, American trailed behind Delaware 21-12.
  • Down, but not going away, AU was still down, 24-19, after a jumper from Delaware's Trinity Vance, who led the Blue Hens in points with eight with 5:17 to go until halftime.
  • A Driscoll layup with 1:09 to play in the second period had AU down one, 29-28, and it was Moore-Nicholson who put the Eagles in the lead for the first time in the game off a layup to make it 30-29 with 30 seconds left in the half.
  • The teams went into the locker rooms tied 30-all at the halftime break. Moore-Nicholson had 14 of her points, six of which came from beyond the arc. The Eagles shot 50 percent from the field while holding the Blue Hens to just nine points and 21 percent shooting in the second period.
  • The Eagles kept the Hens on their toes in the third period, but Delaware wasn't going down quietly and kept it within one possession the entire time they trailed before they pushed back to retake the lead, 45-44 with 2:18 to play in the third period.
  • Once back on top, the Blue Hens didn't relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest. They led 53-47 with one quarter left to play and improved to shoot 53 to American's 44 percent from the floor in the third period.
  • American struggled offensively in the final quarter, going through two long scoring droughts. An AU turnover had the Blue Hens capitalizing and pulling ahead 61-53 with 5:42 to go in the game, breaking a four minute scoring drought for the visitors, at the time, AU hadn't added to their own tally for three minutes.
  • American would eventually add four more points off a pair of Moore-Nicholson free throws and a layup from Anna Rescifina but would end the game held scoreless over the last 5:14 of play.
  • The contest closed with American shooting 42 percent, just below Delaware's 44 percent overall on the night.
