Clemson’s Distance Shooting Takes Down Women’s Basketball

CLEMSON, S.C. – American University women's basketball fell on the road on Thursday in South Carolina, dropping 78-38 to Clemson. The Eagles were unable to claw back into the game after the Tigers opened the game shooting 45 percent from three point range, going 9-for-20 to open the game.

  • Junior guard Lexi Salazar led for AU from the point position and finished with a career-high nine points with three triples to her line on the stat sheet.
  • Molly Driscoll was the only Eagle in double digit scoring position at the end of the night with 13 points.
  • Charlotte Tuhy topped AU on the glass with eight rebounds.
  • Four Tigers scored in double digits on the evening; they were led by Rusne Augustinaite and Mia Moore with 16 points each. Moore and Hadley Periman led for CU on the boards with 20 each.
  • The Eagles took just four trips to the free throw line the entire game, three of which were in the fourth quarter.
How it Happened
  • Moore-Nicholson started it off for the Eagles, scoring a triple. It would be the only field goal for AU in the first half of the opening quarter, and at the media timeout, with 4:49 on the clock, the Tigers led 8-3 over AU.
  • Clemson then went on a 12-6 run. They opened the game shooting 5-for-10 from deep and 9-for-16 overall, leading American 23-9 through one; CU shooting 56 percent to AU's 31.
  • The Eagles squad would hold the Tigers to just two points in the top two minutes of the second period and would see a Salazar three have them in double-digits, down 25-12.
  • At the half, Clemson held a sizeable lead, up 41-20 on 52 percent shooting from the floor. The Eagles weren't lacking opportunities but were 8-for-26 in the first half, being held to shooting just 31 percent still.
  • Coming out of the locker room break, Clemson would add to its lead, going on an 13-3 scoring run and leading 54-23 at the midway point of the penultimate quarter.
  • American was held to just seven points in the third period, down 63-28 with one period of basketball left to play.
  • Driscoll topped the Eagles with five points in the final frame, but 33 percent from the floor in the fourth. Freshmen Andrea Jude and Vienn Sheng earned their first collegiate minutes on the hardwood in quarter.
  • The contest finished with American shooting 27 percent to Clemson's 48 percent overall and 29 percent to CU's 44 percent shooting from three point range.
On the Horizon
The Eagles will be in Bender to take on the Blue Hens of Delaware on Monday, Nov. 17. After that, they take a jaunt North to face off with LIU in Brooklyn on Thursday, Nov. 20 and La Salle in Philadelphia on Saturday, Nov. 22.
