Late Goal Leads to 1-1 Tie for Men's Soccer at Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The American University men's soccer team struck first in the second half on a goal from graduate student Cooper Nunn, but Vermont leveled the score in the final minutes as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

  • Nunn scored AU's first goal of the season on a free kick sent in by senior Leo Palomo.
  • Junior goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts recorded nine saves for the Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vermont set the tone early with a shot on goal in the first 30 seconds of the game, saved by Tibbetts.
  • Tibbetts was required to make three saves in the first 10 minutes.
  • American had two good chances to score in the first half, both being shots from junior Troy Elgersma: a shot in the 24th minute that was saved, and a dangerous free kick in the 44th minute that bounced off the left post.

  • Vermont finally broke through in the 88th minute, as a cross from Sydney Wathuta found the head of Max Murray, floating perfectly into the top of the goal.
