Men's Soccer Strikes Quickly, Blanks Loyola in Patriot League Opener

BOYDS, Md. – The American University men's soccer team won its first game against Loyola Maryland since the 2021 Covid-19 spring season with goals from junior Troy Elgersma and senior Sam Hershey. Striking early, the Eagles quickly shut down the Patriot League preseason favorites to move to 1-0 in League play.
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Elgersma started the game early with a goal and an assist to help the Eagles to an early lead just 16 minutes into the game.
  • Hershey scored the second goal and added an assist to widen the gap in the first half to 2-0. 
  • Junior Matthew Tibbetts recorded his third clean sheet of the season with the help of five saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles took a commanding lead in the first 15 minutes with two goals from Elgersma and Hershey. 
  • The first goal from Elgersma was assisted by Reyes Parra and Hershey in the 11th minute.
  • Hershey and Elgersma came in with the one-two combo for the second goal in the 16th minute. 
  • Loyola tried to respond with four shots on goal in the first half, with no success.
  • Desperate to score in the second half, Loyola mounted an attack with several chances, but the preseason League favorites were unable to break through.
  • The Eagles defended well in the second half, and thanks to the help of reigning Patriot League Men's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week Tibbetts, American held on for a 2-0 win to earn its first win of the season.

  • Though the Eagles ended up winning, Tibbetts had no easy game. He faced 17 shots with five saves compared to 11 shots fired by American
  • Loyola was issued three yellow cards, including one for head coach Steve Nichols, while American received just one booking.

  • The Eagles will be back at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7:00 pm, against beltway rivals UMBC. Before the game, the team will be honoring players for a Hispanic Heritage Celebration.
