Volleyball Improves to 5-0 With a Sweep of Coppin State

WASHINGTON - The hot start to the 2024 season continued for American University volleyball as the Eagles took down Coppin State in straight sets by scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-23. AU had to come back from a 23-22 deficit in the third, but was able to do so thanks to clutch points from freshman Elise Sterling and senior Esma Sipahi.

Notable
  • Leading the way for American was junior Adelina Berisha with a match-high 12 kills and a strong hitting percentage of .379.
  • Sterling and fellow freshman Zedo Yilmaz finished with nine kills each. Sterling committed just a single attack error to hit .667, while Yilmaz was the team's leader with nine digs.
  • Sipahi posted 35 assists along with four kills, and senior Lilou Stegeman led all players with four blocks.
How it Happened
  • The first two sets were both tight early on, while the third saw Coppin State lead most of the way.
  • After the seventh tie at 9-9 in the opening set, AU used a 4-0 run to take the lead and extended it from there. Berisha was the Eagles' leader in the first with five kills, and they out-hit Coppin State .294 to .081.
  • The final tie of the second set also happened at 9-9 before a 3-0 run put AU in the lead for good. It was American's strongest set of the three with 14 kills to just three errors (.423).
  • Coppin State led by as many as four points in the third set at 12-8, and still led by two points at 21-19. The Eagles tied it at 21-all but were still on the defensive after falling behind 22-21 and 23-22.
  • A service error on CSU tied it yet again before Sterling and Sipahi came up with back-to-back kills to complete the sweep.
  • American finished with seven kills to Coppin State's two, and committed just 12 attack errors to Coppin State's 20.

Next Up
  • The Eagles will host three matches at home this weekend, facing Hampton at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, and returning Saturday to face Alabama A&M at 11 a.m. and Maryland at 5 p.m. for the annual Bender Blue-Out.
