Volleyball Cruises to Another Win, Sweeping Hampton to Remain Undefeated

WASHINGTON - Behind the best team hitting percentage in six years, the American University volleyball team remained undefeated this season with a 3-0 sweep of Hampton by scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-8. The Eagles (6-0) posted 40 kills with only two errors while hitting .559, and never trailed in the match.

Notable
  • Now at 6-0, the Eagles have matched their 6-0 start in 2022. With one more win, it will be the team's best start since 2013 when they went 10-0 before finishing 35-3 and advancing to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
  • The last time an AU team hit better (.576) was in a 3-0 sweep of Lafayette in 2018. That was also the last time the Eagles held a team to as few as eight points in a single set.
  • For a second straight match, freshman Zedo Yilmaz was a kill and a dig shy of a double-double with nine of each. She hit .500 in this one, also serving up two aces.
  • Freshman Elise Sterling posted kills on all five of her attack attempts, and is now hitting an incredible .600 for the season with 35 kills on 55 attempts.
  • Both senior Lilou Stegeman and sophomore Sofia Osterdahl finished with eight kills on 10 attacks, hitting .800. Stegeman added a match-best five blocks.
  • Senior Bridget Javitch recorded nine digs and an ace. Freshman Emma Blankenship posted the first two kills of her career, hitting .500 with zero errors.
How it Happened
  • The Eagles out-hit Hampton .429 to .148 in the opening set, leading from the very first point and never trailing in any of the three sets.
  • Both of AU's attack errors happened in the first set, and the Eagles went on to have error-free sets on attack in the second and third.
  • American hit .727 to the Pirates' .071 in the second set.
  • The third set started with a 9-0 run for American, served out by freshman Bella Marrero, and the Eagles went on to win by 17 points.

Next Up
  • The Eagles will turn right around on Saturday to face Alabama A&M at 11 a.m. and Maryland at 5 p.m. for the annual Bender Blue-Out.
