Volleyball Sweeps Loyola Maryland in Patriot League Opener

BALTIMORE - To open its Patriot League schedule, the American University volleyball team earned a three-set sweep on the road at Loyola Maryland by scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-21. It was the fifth sweep of the season for the Eagles (11-2, 1-0) who were led by junior Adelina Berisha's fifth double-double.

Notable
  • Berisha added 11 digs to 17 kills, leading or tying for the match lead in both. She also served up two aces.
  • Freshman Zedo Yilmaz hit .303 with 12 kills, also recording eight digs.
  • Tying Berisha with 11 digs was freshman libero Bella Marrero.
  • Senior middle blocker Lilou Stegeman added four blocks to six kills while hitting a team-best .417.
  • Lauren Link led Loyola Maryland (2-8, 0-1) with 12 kills.
How it Happened
  • The Eagles posted 14 kills to Loyola's eight in the opening set. They took control midway through and used a 4-0 run to go up 22-14.
  • Yilmaz knocked down her fifth kill for set point, and an error on the Greyhounds ended it 25-17 in favor of AU.
  • American jumped out to a 7-1 lead to start the second set and never looked back, out-hitting Loyola .225 to .094 while more than doubling them up on kills at 16-7.
  • The Eagles took an 18-8 lead on their fourth ace of the set and second for freshman Sophia Nagy. Berisha later put down kills on three of the final four points, including the winner, for a 25-15 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Both teams saved their strongest hitting for the third set, but Loyola's .364 with 15 kills was no match for AU's .444 with 18 kills.
  • It was the tightest of the three sets with the Greyhounds closing the gap two two at 20-18, but a 3-0 run gave the Eagles the cushion they needed before going on to win 25-21.
Next Up
  • The Eagles will head to Navy for a 7:30 p.m. Patriot League match on Saturday, Sept. 21.
