Volleyball Remains Undefeated After Four-Set Win at George Washington

WASHINGTON - Battling back from a first-set loss, the American University volleyball team improved to 4-0 on the young season with a four-set victory at George Washington on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles pulled out an extra-points win in the third set to take a 2-1 match lead, and then won 25-20 in the fourth.

Notable
  • Senior Lilou Stegeman posted 12 kills on 19 attacks with only a single error, hitting .579 and getting two blocks.
  • Also leading the Eagles with 12 kills was freshman Zedo Yilmaz, already the Patriot League leader with 4.00 kills per set after four matches. Yilmaz notched her second double-double, adding 10 digs.
  • Senior Adelina Berisha added a team-high and career-high 15 digs to nine kills.
  • Although lacking the number of attempts needed to rank in the PL, freshman Elise Sterling is hitting .526 after four matches with 21 kills and only a single error. She helped her numbers in a big way against GW with eight kills on 11 attacks (.727).
  • Sophomore Sofia Osterdahl was a key factor in the victory as well with seven kills on 15 attempts.
How it Happened
  • The Eagles were aggressive early and jumped out to an 8-3 advantage, but the score was tied by 11-all. From there it stayed close, but it was AU looking strong near the end with a 23-21 lead.
  • GW then put together a string of four straight kills to win 25-23 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • Hitting .382 with 17 kills compared to .294 with 12 kills for GW, American won a tight battle in the second set.
  • AU never trailed after taking an 8-7 lead in the second, but it was tight throughout. With a late ace, the Revs came within a point at 24-23 before a Berisha kill gave the set to the Eagles by a score of 25-23.
  • After posting just a single kill in the opening set, Yilmaz came alive with seven kills in the second to help the Eagles get the win.
  • Limiting errors was key for American in the third set, as the Eagles hit .435 to GW's .136. After AU took an 18-15 lead, the Revs used a 4-0 run to turn the tables and take a 19-18 advantage.
  • From there, it was back-and-forth and went to extra points before AU got a soft-touch kill from Berisha for the 27-25 victory.
  • Down 14-11 in the fourth set, the Eagles mounted an impressive comeback with a 7-1 run for an 18-15 lead.
  • GW came within a point twice, the second time at 20-19, before Osterdahl put down back-to-back kills for a 22-19 advantage.
  • After back-to-back GW attack errors for a 24-19 lead, the Revs served the ball out on the final point as AU took the 25-20 win.
Next Up
  • The Eagles will have a fairly quick turnaround once again as they get set to host Coppin State in Bender Arena at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
