Second-Half Goals Lift No. 7 Cardinals over Eagles in Home Opener

WASHINGTON – After battling to an even 1-all at halftime, the American University field hockey team fell 3-1 to seventh-ranked Louisville after the Cardinals scored goals in each of the final two periods at Jacobs Complex on Sunday afternoon.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Sophomore Sarah Steinman opened the scoring off a penalty corner, assisted by senior Tayla-Jade Weiss.
  • The Cardinals had a 7-3 edge in penalty corners and received two green cards in the contest while the Eagles didn't pick up any.
  • First year Kendall Varty saw her first collegiate minutes in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the opening minute, a forced turnover led sophomore forward Jordan Reicher to an opportunity that set the tone for the first half. An aggressive start by both teams offensively had play back and forth on each side of the field.
  • Following an unsuccessful Louisville penalty corner in the fourth minute, the Eagles didn't miss the opportunity to capitalize on their first corner opportunity when Steinman connected on an assist from Weiss to put American on top with 5:34 remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Cardinals weren't going away though and answered a minute later. They converted on their second penalty corner chance of the game. After Izzy Bianco's initial shot was stopped by Bryn Underwood, Sophia Parker was there to send the rebound into the cage to even the score.
  • In the second quarter, the teams each registered a shot a piece on goal, but nothing came from either and the contest was tied 1-all at the break.
  • Coming out of the halftime break, the Cards had the energy on their side, scoring their second goal midway through the third period to break the deadlock and pull ahead 2-1. Rylie Wollerton collected the ball off a defender's stick in the circle and sent it into the top left corner of cage past Underwood's stick.
  • Louisville added their insurance goal in the fourth quarter, seizing a penalty opportunity with just under 10 minutes to play. A shot to the right post found a diving Wollerton who deflected the ball into the cage for her second goal of the game.
