HARRISONBURG, Va. – As the sun set over the turf field in Southern Virginia, the Eagles of the American University field hockey team battled into their second double overtime game in three games. Ultimately, a penalty corner taken by James Madison in the 75th minute of play would decide the game, the Dukes taking the victory over the Eagles, 3-2.
QUOTES FROM COACH JENNINGS
"A tough loss for us tonight, but great credit to JMU for their fight and perseverance," said head coach
Steve Jennings on the evening. "They found a way to tie it up on a late corner and then got it done in overtime. Although we never like learning from losses, I think we can use our opponents tonight as a template for the fight and resolve necessary for us to be successful moving forward.
"I look forward to seeing how this fuels our fire."
QUICK NOTABLES
- Sophomores Jordan Reicher and Sophie Willemse got their first goals of the 2024 season. In 2023, Reicher scored one goal and Willemse two.
- Bryn Underwood, graduate student goalkeeper, had eight saves.
- The Dukes of JMU had a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the third minute of the game Federica Turina Dellamaggiore had the first shot of the game for either team. The Dukes' Mia Julian was issued a green card in the seventh minute, giving AU a two minute player advantage, but the squad was unable to capitalize on it.
- Two Eagles shots on goal came in the ninth minute, from Emilia Winkler and then from Reicher. The attempts were back-to-back within seconds of each other, but JMU's keeper Molly Schreiner managed to save both.
- Neither team came out of the opening frame with a corner, but the shot percentage would hold, American led 3-0 overall and 2-0 in shots on goal over JMU.
- Less than thirty seconds into the second period, the Dukes' Madelief Molier sent a shot in off a cross in front of the goal, and they ahead 1-0, shifting momentum their way. A minute later, JMU earned their first penalty corner of the game.
- Coming off the corner attempt from JMU, the Eagles were able to take advantage of the Dukes being pushed high up the field. Sprinting the opposite direction, Reicher had a give-and-go with Turina Dellamaggiore before she corralled the ball in the circle and waited for Schreiner to leave her goal before she slammed it past three defenders into the cage. The game was an even 1-all with over 12 minutes to play before the halftime break.
- The scoreline would hold until halftime. JMU had taken a 6-3 shots-on-goal advantage and had the only corner taken in the half.
- Coming out of the break, the Eagles put their stamp on the second half early. AU was awarded a penalty corner in the first minute of the third quarter and after being inserted by goal-scorer Reicher, Winkler corralled it for Willemse who swept it past the defense and had the ball clanking against the back of the cage.
- Reicher would have another attempt on goal, the Eagles once again taking advantage of a Dukes' penalty corner, but the slapshot was saved by JMU's Schreiner. The third quarter would finish out with the Eagles holding their 2-1 lead.
- Having learned their lesson once in the game already, the Dukes prevented another penalty corner that was sent toward the goal by Willemse from becoming a goal in the 49th minute.
- Four minutes remaining saw JMU win another penalty corner but the shot by Alice Roeper was saved in the air by Underwood, her eighth save of the game. Another corner was awarded though in the 58th minute, and the Dukes were able to level 2-all on tip in from Mia Julian.
- Two shots on goal from American with twenty seconds left would be blocked and saved successively and the game would need more the 60 minutes to be decided.
- James Madison possessed the ball for most of the first overtime period, but the first shot of extra time came from Rebecca Bonness and another coming from Agustina Roffo with 21 seconds left in the extra frame.
- Sarah Beers of the Dukes earned a green card in the first thirty seconds of the second overtime frame and Mia Julian's yellow card had the Eagles up seven-to-five in players on the field but right as the teams were back to even strength, Winkler was sent off with a green card.
- A James Madison penalty corner was earned in the fifth minute of double overtime and the shot by Alice Roeper was past Willemse and over Underwood. The Dukes took the game 3-2 over the Eagles.
