Men's Soccer Falls to Nationally-Ranked Hofstra

BOYDS, Md. – The American University men's soccer team took on No. 17-ranked Hofstra, and were tied at halftime, but the Pride unleashed three second-half goals to knock off the Eagles.
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • American had some good chances early in the game, but Hofstra was the first to score, in the first goal allowed this season by the Eagles.
  • American got on the board shortly after, as a cross from sophomore Jared Weber forced an own goal to tie the game, 1-1 at halftime.
  • Three second-half goals for Hofstra took the nationally-ranked Pride to victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Graduate student Ethan Boyle had the first chance of the game for the Eagles in the 15th minute, a shot from just inside the box that was saved by Hofstra in the bottom left corner of the goal.
  • Hofstra's first chance came in the 26th minute, a shot from close range saved immediately by junior goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts.
  • Tibbetts was needed again in the 32nd minute, as he came out of the box to fend away a breakaway attack from the Pride.
  • Scoring was opened up on a Hofstra corner kick in the 39th minute. Gabriel Pacheco scored from just a few feet away to take the lead.
  • It did not take long for the game to be knotted up again, as a cross from Weber forced an error from the Pride and an own goal to tie the game, 1-1.
  • The score was tied at halftime.
  • Hofstra retook the lead early in the second half on another close-range goal in the 57th minute.
  • The Pride scored an insurance goal in the 71st minute to take a 3-1 lead.
  • Hofstra extended their lead shortly thereafter with another goal in the 78th minute.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Hofstra recorded seven shots on goal to just one shot on goal for American.
  • In another physical game, especially in the second half, Hofstra committed 16 fouls to American's 12.
  • There were three yellow cards booked in the contest, two for American and one for Hofstra.
