Men's Soccer Unable to Score in Close Loss at UNC Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Despite producing more chances than it had in its first two games of the season combined, the American University men's soccer team was unable to score, falling to UNC Wilmington on Friday night, 1-0.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Junior goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts recorded a career-high 10 saves for the Eagles.
  • UNC Wilmington's goal came late in the first half, proving to be the only score necessary for the Seahawks to take the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American had the first chance of the game, as senior Leo Palomo fired a promising shot in just the second minute, but it was saved by UNCW.
  • Shortly after, sophomore Jared Weber had a chance for the Eagles, also saved in the fourth minute.
  • Both teams provided ample chances in the first half, but it was UNCW who scored in the 38th minute, as a long ball from well outside the box served a headed goal that fell into the top corner of the goal as Tibbetts tried to save it.
  • Despite Tibbetts getting a hand on the ball, Ryan Lee scored in what proved to be the only goal of the game.
  • Both teams had a number of chances again in the second half, as Tibbetts made seven saves to keep the Eagles in the game.
  • Most of American's chances came in the early stages of the second half, but UNCW recorded nine saves to keep American off the board.
  • UNCW managed to control the ball well over the final 15 minutes of the game to close out the game and record its first win of the season.
