WASHINGTON – Twenty years after its last significant upgrade, Reeves Field and Greenberg Track, the home of American University's men's and women's soccer and cross country/track programs, is set to undergo a $1.5 million renovation in 2025. With the construction of the Alan and Amy Meltzer Center for Athletic Performance well underway, the forward progress of AU Athletics facilities ensures their major role in a bright future for the Eagles.
With a brand-new, bermudagrass surface, state-of-the-art irrigation and drainage systems, along with the new scoreboard already in place, Reeves Field will cement itself as one of the premier soccer facilities in the Washington, D.C., area. Greenberg track will see a new, high-caliber track surface installed to support the training of AU's varsity running student-athletes and benefit the entire university community.
Construction on the field is set to begin following the spring season of 2025, and be ready for competition that fall. Completion of the Meltzer Center is slated for the 2025-26 academic year.
"This is an extremely exciting step forward for American University Athletics," said Director of Athletics & Recreation JM Caparro, who began his tenure last month. "Building off the momentum created by the brand-new Meltzer Center, these advancements provide our student-athletes and coaches the infrastructure to support their championship chase."
Due to field conditions during construction of the CAP, both the men's and women's soccer teams will designate the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md., just east of Gaithersburg, as their home field in the fall of 2024. All eight home men's soccer games and five home women's soccer games will be played at Maureen Hendrick's Field at Championship Stadium, the SoccerPlex's premier site of its 24 fields.
Maureen Hendrick's Field is surrounded by 3,200 hard seats, with an overall capacity of 5,000. Championship stadium has a fully functional press box, sound system, video board, and scoreboard.
While American University continues to invest in our student-athletes' success, additional support to maximize the impact of this project on the soccer, cross country, and track and field programs is needed. Philanthropic contributions are instrumental in completing this project and creating a state-of-the-art facility that elevates our athletics program and fosters excellence for all Eagles.
Please contact chief development officer Lindsey Campbell at lindseyc@american.edu for information on how you can support this and future projects.
The complete fall schedules for men's and women's soccer will be released in the coming days on AUEagles.com, featuring a slate of eight men's home games and five women's home games to be played at the SoccerPlex.
