Women’s Basketball Falls Short at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – On the road in a rowdy Alumni Hall, the American University Women's Basketball team fell 73-57 to Navy in the penultimate game of the regular season. The Eagles had brought the game to as close as three at the half but were unsuccessful in following through on the second-half comeback.
 
The game saw Emily Johns score her 1,000th career-point for the Eagles.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Johns topped the Eagles with 18 points on 6-for-14 shooting. The senior forward went 4-for-4 from the line and grabbed six rebounds.
  • Anna LeMaster, despite foul trouble when she picked up her third foul with two minutes left in the first, still managed to make an impact. The senior guard was able to score 16 points offensively and crashed the boards to lead the team with seven rebounds.
  • Navy went 10-for-17 from beyond-the-arc, shooting 59% from distance and 54% overall while limiting American to 23% from distance and 38% overall from the floor.
  • For Navy, Zanai Barnett-Gay and had a game high 23 points on 9-for-15 shooting. On the glass, Maren Louridas led the Mids with 8 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Johns got the first points of the game on the first possession, but Navy's Barnett-Gay dropped two from deep to and so did Smith to open the game, but balanced scoring had the down 10-9 with four minutes gone in the first.
  • The Mids went 4-for-6 from distance to start, but balanced scoring from the Eagles had the game knotted at 16-all with 4:39 to play in the first. Ivy Bales had six of her eight points at this point, going 3-for-4 from the floor.
  • Navy took a seven point lead to finish out the first, closing the frame up 25-18, and subsequently jumped out with two unanswered baskets in the second to force an Eagles timeout one minute into the frame, down 11 points.
  • Eight points from Johns along with five from LeMaster led the Eagles on a run, down just three, 40-37, at the halftime break.
  • As a squad, the Eagles outscored the Mids 19-15 in the second frame to make it a one possession game entering the second half.
  • With her penultimate basket in the first half, Johns earned her 1,000th career point for AU; she was an integral part of a 17-4 American run in the bottom half of the second period to pull the Eagles back within three.
  • Not letting go of their lead, the Mids held a 51-42 lead with 3:30 to play in the third, starting the second half with an 11-5 run. With one minute left to play in the quarter, Navy had stretched their lead to nine, leading 53-44.
  • The fourth would be more of the same as the third, and the Mids sailed ahead while American fought to keep up. As time wound down, Navy dictated the pace and went on to win 73-57 when they outscored the Eagles 18-13 in the fourth frame.

American will be on the road for its final game of the regular season, heading to Baltimore on Wednesday, March 6 to take on Loyola Maryland at 7 p.m.
