INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Emily Johns led the Eagles with 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting. She got into foul trouble, ultimately fouling out with 4:19 remaining and cutting her influence on the court.
  • Senior guard Ivy Bales led American with five rebounds and four assists, also grabbing a steal and a block.
  • American out-shot Army as a team 46% to 43% from the field, but the Eagles got out-rebounded 38-22 and that impacted their ability to make a difference on second-chance points.
  • For Army, Trinity Hardy had a game-high 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Johns got the first points of the game for AU after the team turned the ball over on their first two possessions. The turnovers combined with three offensive rebounds for Army gave the Black Knights an 8-4 lead at the first media timeout.
  • Buoyed by shooting 63.6% from the field in the quarter, Army jumped out to a ten-point lead with 2:09 left in the first. However, the Eagles grabbed three steals in the last two minutes to hold the Black Knights without a shot attempt for the remainder of the quarter, going on a 5-0 run in the process to narrow the score to 16-11 in favor of Army at the break.
  • Army's strong shooting continued, going on a 10-0 run to start the second quarter to take a 26-11 lead. A game defined by runs, American fought back with a 6-0 run spurred by two layups and a steal from Anna LeMaster to get the game back within ten with 2:44 left in the half.
  • The Eagles trailed 35-24 at the intermission.
  • American continued to slowly chew away at Army's lead coming out of the break, making five of its first six shots, including back-to-back layups from Johns to bring the Eagles' deficit down to five, trailing 39-34 four minutes into the half.
  • Army attempted to pull away once again, leading by as many as 11, but American managed to keep the game close, with a Johns jumper to close out the third keeping the Eagles within five with the score 45-40.
  • American never got any closer than four in the final frame, dropping the game 66-52.
