Men's Soccer Advances to Patriot League Tournament Semifinals on Penalty Kicks

ROCKVILLE, Md. – In a tense Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal that saw each team score a pair of second-half goals and a dramatic shootout, the American University men's soccer team advanced to the semis over Loyola Maryland after Cooper Nunn's goal in the fifth round of penalty kicks gave the Eagles the edge. All four goals in regulation were scored in a span of 17 minutes in the second half, with Taku Takahashi and Sam Hershey converting for American.

How it Happened
  • After the Greyhounds got on the board first in the 56th minute, Takahashi answered six minutes later by beating Dylan van der Walt low to the keeper's right.
  • On a free kick just three minutes after Takahashi's marker, Hershey took the pass from Jared Weber and found the back of the net on the high right side to give AU a 2-1 lead.
  • Loyola evened the score back up in the 73rd minute.
  • The Eagles peppered van der Walt with three shots on net after the game was tied back up in regulation, but the keeper was up to the task.
  • Matthew Tibbetts collected a save in the 86th minute, one of his two saves on the evening and the only time he was tested after Loyola had knotted the score.
  • After 110 minutes of action, the teams matched each other goal for goal through the first four rounds of the shootout.
  • Loyola's Richie Nichols missed his attempt high in the fifth round of the shootout, opening the door for the Eagles.
  • Nunn beat van der Walt to the high right side to send the Eagles to the semifinals.
