Bucknell Edges Out Men’s Soccer, 6-5, in PKs in Patriot League Semifinals

LEWISBURG, Pa. – For the squad's second game in a row in the Patriot League Tournament, the American University men's soccer team battled through regulation and both overtime periods before the results needed to be decided by a penalty shootout. In their semifinal matchup against the Bison, the Eagles fell, 1-1 (6-5), in penalty kicks.

Quick Notables
  • Sam Hershey's goal was his sixth of the season. The senior finishes the season tied at top of the squad in points (13) with Troy Elgersma from his team-leading six goals along with an assist.
  • Each team registered four shots on goal, Bucknell from 11 shots overall and American from 10.
  • Bucknell committed 13 fouls to American's five and earned three yellow cards to AU's one.
How It Happened
  • The Bison went ahead early in the 18th minute on a penalty kick from Jack Lucas that soared past an outstretched Matthew Tibbetts who guessed right but couldn't quite get a hand on it to keep it out.
  • AU's best chance in the first half came in the 38th minute when Sebastian Garces took a free kick right at the edge of the Eagles' attacking third. Bucknell's keeper, Freddie Lapworth, dealt with the double-bounced low ball to maintain the 1-0 lead for the Bison.
  • In the second half, shots on Bucknell's goal poured in, AU holding a 6-4 advantage in the second half alone.
  • An equalizer came in the 69th minute from a header put over Lapworth in goal by Hershey thanks to a quick give from Jonah Fogel to Palomo who sent the ball sailing into the box to Hershey.
  • Nothing more came for either team in the dying embers of the second half, even with a dangerous flick from Bucknell in the final two minutes of regulation, and the game went to overtime with the teams level, 1-all.
  • As the first overtime period wound down, Tibbetts had a heroic diving save to keep AU and Bucknell level in the 98th minute.
  • It wouldn't be determined in overtime though, and the game went to penalties. This was the second time in two games that the Eagles faced down a penalty shootout.
  • In the eighth round of penalties, the Bison claimed the win and advanced to the Patriot League Championship on a 6-5 shootout advantage.
