Loyola Maryland Beats Volleyball in Four Sets

WASHINGTON - There was no season sweep of Loyola Maryland for American University volleyball, as the Eagles dropped a four-set home match to the Greyhounds after beating them in three sets on the road in September. The match was tied at 1-1 before Loyola won 27-25 in the third and then carried that momentum to a fourth-set victory.

Notable
  • Junior Adelina Berisha was one kill shy of her season high, posting 22 kills to lead American.
  • Freshman Zedo Yilmaz recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 14 digs to go with 19 kills, also hitting an impressive .436.
  • AU's leader in hitting percentage was freshman Elise Sterling who knocked down seven kills on 15 attempts with zero errors to hit .467.
  • Freshman Bella Marrero posted a team-high 16 digs, and senior Esma Sipahi tallied 45 assists.
How It Happened
  • The third set was the only one with more than three ties or one lead change, as the Greyhounds won two sets by leading most of the way, and AU won a third in similar fashion.
  • American trailed 24-19 in the first set before fighting off three set points, but lost 25-22 on a service error.
  • The Eagles recovered for a 25-19 win in the second behind six kills from Yilmaz, and back-to-back kills from Berisha to close it out.
  • Down 22-20 in the third, AU rattled off three straight for a 23-22 lead. Loyola then scored back-to-back points for a 24-23 lead, and Sterling posted back-to-back kills to give the Eagles their first set point at 25-24.
  • From there, momentum went back to the Greyhounds who got three straight kills including two from Caitlin Churney to end the set up 27-25 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • There were three early ties in the fourth set, but Loyola took a lead at 4-3 and never relinquished it.
  • Serving was a downfall for the Eagles all match long, as they committed 14 service errors to the Greyhounds' nine, and only served up five aces to the Greyhounds' 10.
Up Next
  • The Eagles will be back at home on Saturday night, Nov. 9, facing Navy at 7 p.m.
