Volleyball Drops Hard-Fought Match to Navy in Five Sets

WASHINGTON - Plenty of resilience was on display for American University volleyball in a five-set match against Navy after the Eagles went down two sets to none, but ultimately it was the Midshipmen to get the 15-12 win in the fifth set. It was the third straight loss for the Eagles, who remain in third place in the Patriot League with one match remaining.

Notable
  • It was a 20-kill night for Adelina Berisha, who made it a double-double with 14 digs.
  • Holly Hopkins and Elise Sterling posted 11 kills each, with Sterling adding a team-high five blocks.
  • It was the first career double-double and first significant game action for freshman Deniz Dakak, who added 11 digs to 37 assists.
  • Bella Marrero had 20 digs to lead the Eagles.
How It Happened
  • The first two sets were lackluster for American, particularly the first with the Eagles committing 10 hitting errors to 11 kills.
  • For a second night in a row, serving was a problem as AU finished with 13 service errors compared to just five for Navy.
  • After losing set one 25-20, the Eagles fought off a couple set points in the second but still lost 25-19.
  • AU turned it around in the third set, leading 20-13 after back-to-back kills from Sophia Nagy.
  • Holly Hopkins posted seven of her 11 kills in the match in the third set, hitting .375.
  • The Mids nearly came back from a 23-16 deficit, making it a two-point set at 24-22, but Berisha go the job done with a kill to keep the Eagles in the match.
  • Things were wild in the fourth set with AU trailing 24-21 before coming back to win. It was a 6-1 swing that included two kills for Sterling and the winner from Berisha to take it 27-25 and even the match at 2-2.
  • The Eagles got 10 kills to Navy's eight in the fifth set, but had three more service errors than the Mids and two fewer blocks.
  • American erased an 11-6 deficit to tie the score at 11-11, but Navy closed out the match with a 4-1 run.
Up Next
  • The Eagles will be at home once again for their final match of the regular season, hosting Lehigh for Senior Day at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16.
