Federica Turina Dellamaggiore: Bringing Argentine Passion to AU Field Hockey

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, American University proudly spotlights student-athlete Federica Turina Dellamaggiore, a senior standout on the field hockey team who this past weekend celebrated with a magical buzzer-beater goal to help her team remain undefeated in Patriot League play. Hailing from Villa Carlos Paz, Argentina, Federica has brought not only her field hockey talents but also her vibrant Argentine heritage to AU. Majoring in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in Graphic Design, Federica chose AU for its prestigious field hockey program, world-class academics, and the opportunity to live in the nation’s capital.

Federica’s field hockey journey began at the age of six, inspired by watching her older sister play. “I was always at her games, and one day I decided to jump in. I loved it from the start,” she recalls. Field hockey has deep roots in Argentina, and its popularity surged after Las Leonas, the national team, won the 2010 World Cup. Her mother also played a significant role in shaping her love for the sport. “My mom played field hockey for many years, and she still plays today. My family’s love for the game and the passion for sports in Argentina pushed me to pursue it competitively.”

For Federica, representing her country at American University is both an honor and a responsibility.

It’s a big privilege to represent Argentina while playing at AU. I want to be a good example of who Argentinians are and stay true to my identity. Sharing my culture with my teammates and coaches is something I’m very proud of.

She highlights the contrasts between playing field hockey in Argentina and in the U.S., noting the differences in intensity. "At home, the sidelines are full of passion. Everyone is loud and animated, whether they’re cheering or coaching. Here, it’s a bit more reserved,” she says with a smile. Despite the differences, she believes they’re an opportunity to learn and grow. “I always say that traveling the world and experiencing different cultures opens up your mind in ways you didn’t know were possible. It applies to field hockey as well."

Federica’s Argentine roots have played a pivotal role in shaping her competitive spirit. “Argentinians are passionate, especially when it comes to sports. That’s definitely shaped me into the player I am today,” she explains. Her drive and dedication to the game are evident in her hard work on the field and her leadership among her teammates.

Off the field, Federica channels her creativity through her academic pursuits in Broadcast Journalism and Graphic Design. She is passionate about storytelling and creating impactful visuals, blending her athletic and academic interests into a holistic college experience.

As Hispanic Heritage Month continues, Federica hopes that her time at AU not only reflects her personal achievements but also shines a light on the importance of embracing diverse cultures. “It means a lot to me to bring a piece of Argentina here to American University, and I hope to inspire others to embrace where they come from and share it proudly.”

Federica Turina Dellamaggiore is more than a field hockey player; she’s a proud ambassador of her Argentine culture, bringing her passion and energy to the game and the AU community. Through her journey, she exemplifies the value of diversity in sports and the power of staying true to one’s roots while pursuing excellence on the field.
