As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, American University proudly spotlights student-athlete Federica Turina Dellamaggiore, a senior standout on the field hockey team who this past weekend celebrated with a magical buzzer-beater goal to help her team remain undefeated in Patriot League play. Hailing from Villa Carlos Paz, Argentina, Federica has brought not only her field hockey talents but also her vibrant Argentine heritage to AU. Majoring in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in Graphic Design, Federica chose AU for its prestigious field hockey program, world-class academics, and the opportunity to live in the nation’s capital.
Federica’s field hockey journey began at the age of six, inspired by watching her older sister play. “I was always at her games, and one day I decided to jump in. I loved it from the start,” she recalls. Field hockey has deep roots in Argentina, and its popularity surged after Las Leonas, the national team, won the 2010 World Cup. Her mother also played a significant role in shaping her love for the sport. “My mom played field hockey for many years, and she still plays today. My family’s love for the game and the passion for sports in Argentina pushed me to pursue it competitively.”
For Federica, representing her country at American University is both an honor and a responsibility.
