Volleyball Beats Lafayette in Straight Sets for Fourth Patriot League Sweep

WASHINGTON - The result was rarely in doubt as American University volleyball made quick work of visiting Lafayette, beating the Leopards 25-18, 25-14 and 25-20 on Saturday afternoon in Bender Arena. Freshman Zedo Yilmaz had a match-high 14 kills for the Eagles, who held Lafayette to just 23 kills in the entire match.

Notable
  • Yilmaz hit .323 and added seven digs, an ace and a block to her 14 kills.
  • Sophomore Sofia Osterdahl continued an impressive weekend performance with 11 kills, hitting .231.
  • Defensively, freshman Bella Marrero led the way with a match-high 14 digs along with three aces.
  • The Eagles got 28 assists and four kills from senior setter Esma Sipahi, who committed zero errors on five attacks in hitting .800.
  • Freshman Elise Sterling led AU with five blocks.
  • As a team, the Eagles served up nine aces compared to four for Lafayette, and had 37 kills to the Leopards' 23.
How it Happened
  • There were four early ties in the opening set, but Lafayette matched its seven kills with seven errors and the Eagles ran away with it after the final tie at 11-11.
  • Osterdahl posted the final kill, her fifth in just the first set, for the winner and a score of 25-18.
  • American surged ahead 8-1 in the second set and never looked back, as senior Lilou Stegeman served out a couple of long stretches. The second of those put AU up 20-12, and the Eagles won 25-14 on a Marrero ace.
  • Lafayette had its best showing in the third set, forcing AU to recover from a 9-5 deficit.
  • The Eagles had it tied up by 11-11, however, and never trailed again after taking a 15-14 lead on one of two aces for senior Bridget Javitch.
  • Yilmaz, Osterdahl and Stegeman combined for a trio of kills at the end to give American a 25-20 set win and a 3-0 win in the match.
