Volleyball Fights Back but Drops PL Home Opener in Five Sets to Bucknell

WASHINGTON - There was a lot of fight shown by American University volleyball in rallying to come back from a two-set deficit, but ultimately the Eagles (13-4, 3-2) fell in five sets to visiting Bucknell (13-1, 5-0) in their Patriot League home opener.

Notable
  • Seniors Bridget Javitch and Esma Sipahi were both honored prior to the start of the match.
  • Javitch received a commemorative volleyball for reaching 1,000 career digs, while Sipahi earned one for 2,000 assists.
  • Sipahi drew closer to number seven on the all-time career assist rankings with 41 against Bucknell, also tallying 10 digs for a double-double.
  • Sophomore Sofia Osterdahl had a breakout match, reaching a new career-high with 19 kills.
  • Going above 20 digs for the first time was freshman libero Bella Marrero who crushed her previous career high with 27 digs.
  • Freshman Zedo Yilmaz earned her seventh double-double of the season with 17 kills and 17 digs.
  • Senior Lilou Stegeman had the highest hitting percentage for AU at .346. She also finished with eight digs.
  • American posted 64 kills to the Bison's 57, but also recorded 11 more attack errors and seven more service errors.
How it Happened
  • American trailed for most of the first set before a 4-1 run put them within a point at 19-18. The Eagles tied it up at 23-23 and 24-24 on a Stegeman kill, but Bucknell rallied for two points to win it 26-24.
  • The Bison hit .200 to AU's .151 in the opening set.
  • AU trailed 5-0 to start the second set before later coming within a point at 13-12, but the Eagles never took a lead and lost 25-19.
  • The momentum shifted after the Eagles took their first lead of the match early in the third set. They held that lead for the entire set, during which they went on a nine-point run and won 25-20.
  • American hit .258 in the third, its strongest of the match, while Bucknell hit .077.
  • AU lost some momentum early in the fourth, being down for the first 13 points.
  • Back-to-back kills from Osterdahl turned the tide, and the Eagles ran away with it for a 25-21 win to even the match at 2-2.
  • Errors on the attack and the serve proved too costly for AU in the fifth set as Bucknell used a six-point run take control and win 15-7.
