WASHINGTON – In what was their final game at Jacobs Complex this season, the Eagles of the American University field hockey team defeated the visiting Hofstra Pride, 2-1, on Senior Day.
Quick Notables
- Jordan Reicher scored the Eagles' first goal of the day. This is the sophomore forward's first goal since AU topped William & Mary (Sept. 20). She leads the team in goals (7) and points (17).
- The game winning goal came from Agustina Roffo. Roffo, the senior midfielder, is second on the team in points (12) from six goals.
- American took 31 shots, 20 of which were on target. The Pride's goalkeeper Peike Roos made 16 saves.
How It Happened
The Pride opened the scoring early, with a hot start, they got a goal in the third minute, at the 2:18 mark with Jaime Lewis assisting Heather Canavan for her first goal of the season.
Not even a minute later, at 3:12, Reicher equalized for the Eagles. Hofstra was trying to clear the ball out of the back, but Reicher intercepted, forcing the turnover just outside the circle before slicing the ball into the cage. The game was tied 1-all.
Neither team scored in the second period despite AU taking nine shots and earning four penalty corners.
Coming out of halftime though, American went on the attack. In the frame, the Eagles took 11 shots and earned five corners while limiting Hofstra to neither of each.
In the 35th minute, Roffo was the difference maker. On an AU penalty corner, she attempted to tip in a shot from
Sophie Willemse but was blocked. When the ball rebounded to her, Roffo quickly settled it and took the shot, putting the Eagles up 2-1.
There was almost a third AU goal in the 46th minute, Willemse's shot cleared off the line in a defensive save by Jamie Mc Millan.
The Pride pulled their goalie with 1:22 left to play, but the advantage of the extra field player wouldn't be enough to find the equalizer.
From Head Coach Jennings
"With how well Hofstra's deep defense and goalkeeper played, that early goal was critical. We had a lot of chances throughout the game, but we needed to get it level and we did so right away. I love that response; I thought we were calm and poised. We kept pushing for more goals as the game went on today, but great credit to their defense they made some amazing saves and made the game really close all the way through."
Coming Up
The Eagles final game of the regular season will be on Saturday, Nov. 2 on the road against Bucknell.
The game will determine whether the two teams share the Patriot League regular season crown, or if American can grab it outright. It will also help determine who will host the PL Tournament. As it currently stands it could be American, Bucknell, or Lafayette.
