WASHINGTON – The American University field hockey team is now a perfect 5-0 in conference play with one league game remaining after defeating Lehigh in a shutout, 3-0, on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Eagles claim at least a share of the Patriot League regular season title. The final determination will come when AU travels to Bucknell next weekend.
Quick Notables
- Emily Horace opened the scoring for the Eagles early, in the sixth minute of the game, and earned a brace when in the 50th minute of the game she scored again in open play. The two goals were Horace's second and third of the season, matching her career high that was notched in 2022.
- Freshman Olivia Morraye earned her first goal of the season, and her collegiate career, when she scored the Eagles' second goal of the day.
- Goalkeeper, graduate student Bryn Underwood, only had to make two saves in the contest. Her first of two was on a Lehigh penalty stroke. It's Underwood's sixth clean sheet in 15 games, good enough to be tied for ninth in the NCAA.
How It Happened
Early pressure in Lehigh's defensive third led to AU's second penalty corner at the 4:45 mark. The ball made its way to
Sophie Willemse who swept it toward the cage. Her shot was heading wide right before it was tipped by Horace high and fast to put American up, 1-0, five minutes in.
Twenty seconds in the second quarter, on the Eagles' third penalty corner, they scored again. Inserted into the scrum by Morraye, the ball made its way to
Jordan Reicher who snuck it back to Morraye waiting at the far post to tip it in past a diving Canoni.
With the first half closing down, the Mountain Hawks were fighting back, earning a penalty stroke with just under four minutes remaining. Underwood, cool as you like, made a diving save to preserve her clean sheet.
The final goal of the day came at the 49:02 mark in the fourth frame. Carried into the circle by
Delia Rabatin, the ball crossed paths with Missimer who couldn't quite corral it and then with Huddleston who snuck it backward to Horace who sent it in for the, 3-0. victory.
From Associate Head Coach Matula
"We were trying to rebound from our game last weekend against Brown. I think we felt like we didn't perform our best, so we wanted to come out here, right out of the jump, and take it to them. Especially with certain things on the line in terms of hosting and Patriot League Championships coming up. We wanted to make sure we cemented our spot on the top."
Coming Up
The Eagles squad returns to Jacobs for their final home game, against Hofstra, on Sunday (Oct. 27). The game against Hofstra will be AU's senior day game and a celebration of Alumni. The Eagles final game of the regular season will be on Saturday, Nov. 2 on the road against Bucknell.
