Eagles Move to 4-0 in the Patriot League with Win Over Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – The American University field hockey team bounced back and earned its fourth Patriot League victory on Saturday against Holy Cross as the Eagles defeated the Crusaders, 5-1, on the road.

Quick Notables
  • Agustina Roffo got her fourth and fifth goals of the season, a career high for the senior midfielder. She's second on the team now with 10 points.
  • Kaleigh Missimer's goal was her third of the season and second from a penalty stroke. She scored both of her previous goals against Colgate (Oct. 5).
  • This was Rebecca Bonness' second goal of the season. She last scored against then-ranked No. 3 UVA (Sept. 15).
  • After notching five assists on the season, including one in this game, Emilia Winkler's goal was her first of the 2024 season.
How It Happened
The first quarter was dominated by the Eagles. At the 8:42 mark AU was awarded its fourth penalty corner and in the resulting scuffle, a penalty stroke. Missimer, stepped up to the spot and lifted it into the top left pocket of the cage.

Less than a minute into the second frame, at 15:50, Bonness sent a slapshot that the Crusaders' keeper had no chance against and doubled the AU lead, 2-0. The goal came off an intercept in the Eagles' defensive third by Emily Horace.

The Eagles continued to pour on the goals. Elle Ridge forced a turnover and fed Roffo for her first goal of the day with four minutes to play in the opening half.

Three minutes later, as the clock ticked toward halftime, Winkler made a successful diving attempt to redirect a shot from Tayla-Jade Weiss into the goal.

The Eagles carried a 4-0 lead into the break.

After the break, at 30:57, Holy Cross stole the shutout from AU when a ball from Marissa MacLean swiped across the front of the cage for Saskia Williams to send past Bryn Underwood.

AU still led 4-1 and neither team broke through for the remainder of the period.

With the clock at 48:12, a corner taken by Sarah Steinman found Sophie Willemse who's shot was tipped into the goal by Roffo for her second of the day. The Eagles had a 5-1 lead that would hold through the remainder of the game.

From Head Coach Jennings
"We are very happy with our overall performance today against a talented Holy Cross team. Getting a big league win on the road is critical at this time of year and we loved seeing improvement in several key areas today. It will be a quick turnaround for the team as we have to get ready for a tough Brown team tomorrow."

Coming Up
The Eagles squad stays up North to take on Brown on Sunday (Oct. 20) at 12 p.m.
