Men's Soccer Falls After Halftime Lead at Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The American University men's soccer team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Eagles were overpowered by a talented Virginia team that stormed back to win on Tuesday night, 4-2.
 

QUICK NOTABLES
  • It took just five minutes for American to score, as junior Toshi Davis found the back of the net to give American an early lead.
  • Just seven minutes later, it was American again as senior Sam Hershey scored to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
  • Virginia responded quickly, making it 2-1 in the 19th minute.
  • The Cavaliers scored early in the second half to make it 2-2.
  • Virginia took the lead for the first time in the 53rd minute, making it 3-2.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American struck quickly, as junior Troy Elgersma used an individual bit of skill to earn a one-on-one with Virginia's goalkeeper. His shot was blocked by the keeper, right to the feet of Davis, who finished for his first career goal to give AU a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.
  • It did not take long for American to score again, freshman Oliver Snowdon found Elgersma, who slipped a perfect pass through to Hershey, who finished to make it 2-0 less than 13 minutes into the game
  • Virginia responded accordingly, as Nick Dang got the Cavaliers on the board from a corner kick to make it 2-1 in the 19th minute.
  • American had a good chance later in the half, as freshman Colin O'Brien fired a dangerous shot on goal in the 39th minute, but it was saved by a leaping Virginia goalkeeper.
  • Virginia equalized quickly in the second half, as Kome Ubogu made it 2-2 in the 48th minute.
  • The Cavaliers took the lead for the first time in the 53rd minute on a goal from Luke Burns.
  • Virginia added another in the 61st minute to make it 4-2.
  • On the attack over the final 30 minutes, American had a series of chances to score, including dangerous shots from Elgersma and Hershey, each saved by Virginia's goalkeeper.

  • American and Virginia combined for 32 shots, with Virginia outshooting American 17-15.
  • As American pressured Virginia, especially in the second half, the Cavaliers made six saves in the game.
