Weber's Late Goal Lifts Men's Soccer to 1-0 Win over Lafayette on Senior Night

BOYDS, Md. – Scoring in the 87th minute, the American University men's soccer team picked up a thrilling victory over Lafayette on the Eagles' Senior Night at Maryland Soccerplex. Sophomore Jared Weber netted his first career goal to give AU a crucial three points in the Patriot League standings, where the Eagles are now tied for second place.

  • The Eagles got three saves from junior goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts in his fourth shutout of the season.
  • Shots on goal favored American 5-3, while total shots had the Eagles with a 12-6 advantage.
  • Lafayette picked up three yellow cards, while American had one late in the contest. 
How It Happened
  • The evenly-matched contest was a stalemate nearly the entire way.
  • Lafayette was the earlier aggressor with two first-half shots on goal, while the Eagles' on-target shots were all in the second half.
  • The Leopards' Griffin Huff made his final two saves in the 78th and 85th minutes before Weber finally broke through.
  • Senior Nicholas Shirley and junior Troy Elgersma both helped direct the ball to the feet of Weber, whose shot from the far right found its way into the bottom left corner of the net with three minutes and 15 seconds remaining.
