Eagles Fall to No. 6 Maryland on the Road

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The American University field hockey team managed to hang within one goal of No. 6 Maryland until the second half, but a push from the Terrapins on both sides of the field kept the Eagles from mounting a comeback, dropping the game, 4-1.

Quick Notables
  • Sarah Steinman scored the Eagles lone goal, the sophomore's second of the season. She last scored against the then-ranked No. 7 Louisville Cardinals.
  • Federica Turina Dellamaggiore and Tayla-Jade Weiss were the only other Eagles to register shots on frame in the contest with two and one respectively.
  • The first four goals of the game, three for Maryland and one for the Eagles, were scored off penalty corners.
How It Happened
From the off it was American with the first shot and corner of the game, but neither team was able to hold possession for a substantial amount of time, no momentum mounting.

The teams played a scoreless first quarter. Maryland was first on the board finding the back of the net in the second quarter, at 24:28, off their first penalty corner of the game. The Terps took their 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Terrapins took control of the game in the third quarter. By the 37th minute, the UMD had taken five shots and earned two penalty corners in the frame.

Maryland went on to score again in the third, again from a penalty corner in the 41st minute, doubling their lead to 2-0. The Terrapins scored again, in the 50th minute to go up 3-0 pulling away as time ticked down to make a difference.

Steinman inserted a penalty in the 56th minute, and after a shot by Weiss was saved, snuck the rebound around the keeper and into the back of the cage to prevent the shutout.

The Terrapins managed to tack on another goal less than a minute later, to go up 4-1 with three minutes to play and capping off the game.

From Head Coach Jennings
"We had a tough result tonight against a very strong Maryland team but still have many positive takeaways. We had some great moments in the first half, but we needed to score when we were in our best phases. Maryland took the game over in the second half and we can learn great deal from the level of excellence and consistency they displayed.

"We will look to take those lessons into next weekend against Holy Cross and Brown."

Coming Up
The Eagles squad travels North to take on Holy Cross on Saturday (Oct. 19) at 11 a.m. and Brown on Sunday (Oct. 20) at 12 p.m.
