WASHINGTON – Two goals from
Agustina Roffo and a diving save from
Bryn Underwood in the fourth quarter gave the American University field hockey team the shutout, 2-0 victory over the visiting Boston University Terriers.
The Eagles are the sole remaining unbeaten team in Patriot League play and are riding a four-game win streak.
Quick Notables
- Roffo's goals were the midfielder's second and third of the season. She now sits on six points, tied for second on the team.
- Underwood earned her fifth clean sheet of the season. She sits in the top 20 among goalkeepers in save percentage at 78.9 percent.
How It Happened
In the opening quarter, Roffo scored early, in the eighth minute first goal and put AU up 1-0. From an Eagles' corner,
Federica Turina Dellamaggiore took the initial shot, but it rebounded off the post to Roffo, who managed to swipe it in.
American dominated possession for the remainder of the half, taking 18 total shots to Boston U.'s two. The game would go to halftime with the Eagles up 1-0.
In the 33rd minute, right out of the break,
Emilia Winkler forced a turnover in the Eagles attacking third and raced into the BU circle. Closed down by three defenders, she handed off the ball to an open Roffo who took the back-handed shot and scored to double the lead, 2-0.
Terriers' goalkeeper Kate Thomason got a foot on the ball but was unable to kick it out, only changing its trajectory slightly.
Boston U. picked up the intensity in the final frame, outshooting American for the first time all day (5-2), and even pulling their goalkeeper with three minutes remaining to gain the advantage of an extra field player.
Between the 52nd and 54th minutes, BU had four penalty corners in a row. The first three attempts were blocked and diverted, but the final attempt saw a shot from Boston U.'s Tegan Poerio sent straight at Underwood. Her diving save would preserve her clean sheet and keep the Terriers from gaining any momentum.
