COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After a rain delay that led to a postponed contest, the American University field hockey team took to the turf 14 hours after initially scheduled, for a 9 am contest with Yale at the Terrapin Invitational. The Eagles would take an early 1-0 lead in the first period and then build on it by proceeding to score in each of the following frames, winning 4-0 over the Bulldogs.
QUOTES FROM COACH JENNINGS
"We are very happy to earn a shutout and play a complete game today," said head coach
Steve Jennings post-match. "We are proud of the team for keeping their focus from yesterday–we always preach flexibility, and they were able to show up ready to go this morning against a good Yale team."
QUICK NOTABLES
- Tayla-Jade Weiss' two goals were her first and second of the season. She had already accumulated three assists in the four previous games. They also double the goal total of her sophomore campaign last season.
- Sophomore Agustina Roffo scored her first goal as an Eagle. In her freshman campaign, the Argentinian had two assists and four shots on goal, but her solo effort today marked a milestone in her collegiate career.
- With the result, Steve Jennings is four wins away from reaching 300 careers wins as a head coach.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Once the game took off, the two teams battled it out, each holding strong defensively. American allowed only one shot off, not on target, from Yale, while the Bulldogs allowed only two shots from the Eagles, one of which was on goal.
- The shot on frame resulted in a goal when, in the 14th minute, Sarah Steinman took a corner and Charllene Boshoff tucked it in nicely past the defense. The goal is Boshoff's second in three games played this season, as the graduate student picks up where she left off last season without missing a beat.
- In the second period the game opened up, with the advantages going in favor of the Eagles. The squad took seven shots, five on frame in the 15 minutes, and managed to hold Yale to just one shot.
- In the 24th minute of the contest American would capitalize on another corner, this one taken by Megan Hoffman, and double their lead thanks to Weiss finishing off the play and grabbing her first goal of the morning. American held a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
- Coming out of the halftime break, the Eagles kept the momentum on their side. The third quarter saw the Eagles best the Bulldogs 5-1 in shots on goal despite Yale edging the advantage in corners 3-1 in the period.
- It would be Roffo in the 38th minute, playing in her first game of the season, adding to the score line, and putting the Eagles up 3-0 on a solo effort.
- Weiss' second goal of the contest would come just two minutes before the final horn when again off a corner, taken by Hoffman, the South African would score with an assist going to first-year Emilia Winkler in the process. The goal put the Eagles up 4-0.
- By the final whistle, the Eagles had outshot the Bulldogs 16-5 overall and 12-1 in shots on goal. The Eagles were firing offensively and holding strong defensively on the backline. Goalkeeper Bryn Underwood was only forced to make three saves to maintain the 4-0 shutout.
