Holly Hopkins Leads Volleyball to a Sweep at Coppin State

BALTIMORE, Md. - After a first-set comeback generated momentum, American University volleyball went on to earn a three-set sweep at Coppin State in a midday road contest. The Eagles were led by freshman Holly Hopkins with her first career double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs.

By the Numbers
  • American got 10 kills from grad student Zeynep Uzen, and six kills from grad student Carlie Fikse who hit .500 for the match with zero errors. Fikse also led AU with five blocks.
  • Junior Bridget Javitch led all players in the match with 15 digs.
  • Junior Esma Sipahi and freshman Carly Sciborski posted four blocks each, with Sipahi also totaling 30 assists and six digs.
Notable
  • The opening set got off to an ugly start for the Eagles, who quickly trailed 4-0 and soon 7-1. Coppin State continued to look strong and had a seven-point lead at 20-13.
  • That's when AU got back into it, using an 8-1 run to tie the score at 21-21. CSU put up one more point before the Eagles kept the momentum going with four straight points to close out the set and win 25-22.
  • Two late service aces for Sipahi were key in the first set, and Hopkins came up with six kills in the first set alone.
  • AU kept it going in the second set and never trailed, at one point leading by as many as 10 points at 15-5. The Eagles were up by eight, 24-16, before a late CSU run cut the margin to four at 24-20.
  • Coming out of a timeout, Hopkins finished the second set with her ninth kill for the 25-20 win and the 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The third set was the closest of the three with 13 ties and four lead changes.
  • AU led 13-9 before a Coppin State run put CSU up by a point.
  • It was tight the rest of the way, but an ace from Maya Mrus and errors on CSU were the keys to the Eagles finishing it out with a 25-21 win in the third set.
Next Up
  • After eight matches away from home, the Eagles finally return to host Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. and Lehigh at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30.
