Uzen Leads Volleyball to a Sweep of Lafayette in Patriot League Home Opener

WASHINGTON - The fifth 20-kill match of the season for graduate student Zeynep Uzen helped lead American University volleyball to a 3-0 sweep of visiting Lafayette in the Eagles' Patriot League home opener at Bender Arena. After making a comeback late in the first set, AU went on to win 25-22, 25-20 and 25-19.

By the Numbers
  • Uzen hit an impressive .405 with her 20 kills, committing just three errors on 42 attempts.
  • Grad student Carlie Fikse and freshman Carly Sciborski came up with eight kills apeice, and freshman Holly Hopkins posted seven kills along with seven digs.
  • Junior Bridget Javitch led all players in the match with 15 digs, and Esma Sipahi recorded assists on 39 of AU's 44 kills.
  • The Eagles hit .343 to the Leopards' .282, also serving up more aces with an 8-6 advantage.
  • Senior Maya Mrus was responsible for four of those aces, and Javitch had two.
Notable
  • It was a slow start for American as Lafayette jumped out to an 18-11 lead before things started to turn around.
  • Uzen knocked down three straight kills during a 5-0 run, and added two more before the Eagles knotted up the score at 20-20.
  • The Uzen show continued as she posted kills for leads of 21-20 and 22-20, and Sciborksi later got both set point and the set-winner on kills.
  • The second set was close until 14-14 when American used a 6-0 run to take the lead for good, with that run including two aces from Mrus.
  • Another Uzen kill made it set point at 24-19, and after one service error, freshman Kaitlyn Evans put down a kill for the 25-20 victory and the 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The third set was similar to the second as the score was neck-and-neck through 16-16. 
  • Fikse served out a short run that put AU up 22-17, and an Uzen ace later gave AU the match.

  • The Eagles have a quick turnaround before hosting PL foe Lehigh at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30.
