Volleyball Ends Road Trip with a Split, Falling at Army in Four Sets

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Despite very strong performances from two freshmen, and a first-set victory, American University volleyball fell 3-1 at Army West Point as the Black Knights remained undefeated in Patriot League play. Freshman Holly Hopkins hit .444 with 14 kills, while freshman Carly Sciborski hit .450 with 12 kills.

By the Numbers
  • Hopkins nearly posted a double-double, coming up with nine digs.
  • Junior Bridget Javitch and senior Maya Mrus totaled 10 digs apiece, while junior Esma Sipahi added nine digs to 35 assists.
  • Grad student Zeynep Uzen tallied 11 kills, eight digs, two blocks and two aces.
Notable
  • American never trailed in the first set, eventually winning 25-23 and taking advantage of an error-heavy set by Army. The Eagles also helped their case with three blocks.
  • With the teams tied up at 23-23, Sciborski posted back-to-back kills to end the opening set in AU's favor.
  • The Black Knights ran away with the second set, hitting .417 to AU's .133 and taking the set 25-14.
  • American looked like it would suffer the same fate in the third set, down 16-4, but the Eagles fought back.
  • While AU couldn't close the gap, the Eagles lost just 25-20 after a run down the stretch.
  • At 19-19 in the fourth set, AU had never trailed. But the Black Knights soon took a 21-19 lead with back-to-back aces, and they went on to win 25-23.
Next Up
  • American will play a mid-week non-conference match at Coppin State at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27. That will be the eighth straight match away from home for the Eagles, who finally return home to host Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. and Lehigh at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30.
