WASHINGTON - The final points were hard-earned for American University volleyball but it was a 3-0 sweep nonetheless, as the Eagles (3-1) took care of business against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (2-4) by scores of 25-22, 25-20 and 25-23. Graduate student
Zeynep Uzen posted her third 20-kill effort in the team's four matches this season, and her second double-double.
By the Numbers
- Uzen finished with 20 kills, 11 digs and hit. 359 in an impressive showing both offensively and defensively.
- Freshman Holly Hopkins and freshman Carly Sciborski both played above their experience level, with Hopkins tying her season-high 12 kills and Sciborski knocking down a season-high eight kills.
- The Eagles had assists on 51 of 52 kills, with junior setter Esma Siphai tallying 47 of those assists along with three aces and six digs.
- Junior Lilou Stegeman hit .545 with seven kills and led the team with three blocks.
- As a team, American had its best hitting percentage so far this season of .340 with 52 kills and just 16 errors.
Notable
- The Eagles got 18 kills compared to 12 for UMES in the first set, with six of those coming courtesy of Uzen.
- UMES came within a point at 23-22 before AU pulled out the final two points with a kill from Carly Sciborski and a great decision by Sipahi to send it over on the second touch for a set-winning kill.
- After a tie at 11-11 of the second set, American went on a 4-0 run and stayed comfortably in the lead the rest of the way. The Eagles hit an impressive .483 with 17 kills and just three errors, getting seven from Uzen and six from Hopkins.
- American led 17-12 and 20-16 in the final set before the Hawks worked their way back into it with an inspired run that tied it up at 21-21.
- After two more ties at 22-all and 23-all, Hopkins set up match point with a kill and graduate student Carlie Fikse finished it off.
Next Up
- American will turn right around to face CCSU at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning, before closing out the weekend against Marist later in the day at 5 p.m.
