Volleyball Sweeps CCSU to Start a Two-Match Saturday

WASHINGTON - In the first match of two on a Saturday in Bender Arena, the American University volleyball team made quick work of visiting Central Connecticut State with a three-set victory by scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-14. The Eagles (4-1) hit a season-best .396 and more than doubled up the Blue Devils (0-6) in both kills and digs.

By the Numbers
  • The kill leader was once again graduate student Zeynep Uzen with 17 kills and a career-best hitting percentage of .556.
  • Freshman Holly Hopkins continued her impressive run with 13 kills on 27 attempts, hitting .370 for the match.
  • Libero Bridget Javitch came up with 15 digs and eight assists, while setter Esma Sipahi posted a double-double with 10 digs to go with 34 assists.
  • Graduate student Carlie Fikse recorded seven kills on just 11 attempts to hit .455 and also recorded three blocks. The leader in the match for blocks was junior Lilou Stegeman who posted four.
  • Another strong rookie performance came from freshman Carly Sciborski with seven kills and three blocks.
Notable
  • The Eagles finished with 48 kills to CCSU's 21, 52 digs to the Blue Devils' 24, and had a 7-2 advantage in blocks. 
  • There were six ties and two lead changes in the first set but after 7-7, AU took control and cruised the rest of the way.
  • CCSU was within three at 16-13 in the first set before senior Rachael Bennett served out an 8-0 run as AU established control.
  • In the third set, American recorded only a single attack error with 14 kills, hitting a match-best .520.

  • American will close out the weekend against Marist later today at 5 p.m.
