Volleyball Drops a Hard-Fought, Five-Set Match to Georgetown at Bender Blue Out

WASHINGTON - In a second straight match that went the distance, American University volleyball was unable to complete the comeback for a second time and lost 3-2 to visiting Georgetown (3-0) at the annual Bender Blue Out. There was a crowd of 1,657 on hand to lift the Eagles (2-1) through some key stretches, but ultimately there were too many unforced errors on AU.

By the Numbers
  • Zeynep Uzen was the go-to for American's offense yet again, and came up with a season and match-high 25 kills while hitting .315.
  • Defensively, Bridget Javitch led the Eagles with 21 digs, while Carlie Fikse and Lilou Stegeman posted three blocks each.
  • Esma Sipahi recorded a double-double for a second match in a row, setting yet another career high with 46 assists and adding 10 digs. Sipahi also served up a career-high four aces, and as a team the Eagles had 12 aces to the Hoyas' seven.
  • The Eagles posted 55 kills to Georgetown's 48, but committed an extra eight attack errors while coming up with five fewer blocks.
Notable
  • The match scores saw Georgetown take the first 25-22 before AU cruised to a 25-16 win in the second. Georgetown was back on top 25-21 in the third, and AU turned it around yet again to take it 25-20 in the fourth. The Eagles fell into a big fifth-set hole before making it interesting, but ultimately the Hoyas closed it out, 15-12.
  • AU matched its kills with errors in both the first and third sets, but played drastically better in the second and fourth.
  • The fourth set saw American hit .407, which was the only set above .300 for either team in the entire match.
  • Georgetown led 12-7 in the fifth set before a 4-0 run got American within a point, but the Hoyas later came up with the final two points on a kill and a block to end the comeback hopes for AU.
Next Up
  • American will host three teams in a round robin tournament next weekend, taking on Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), Central Connecticut State (CCSU) and Marist. There will be matches at noon, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m on Friday, with AU facing UMES in that final match.
