DeRubbo Makes Her Return to Lead American to a Victorious Season Opener Over Longwood

WASHINGTON – Riley DeRubbo led the offensive charge for the American University women's basketball team as they kicked their season with a win against Longwood 81-68. DeRubbo made her return to the team after dealing with injury for most of last season by going almost perfect from behind the arc.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Coming off the bench DeRubbo led American with 22 points in the contest 21 of which came from three-point range. She was 7-8 from behind the arch and finished the contest going 77.8% from the field.
  • DeRubbo was one of three Eagles in double digits, Molly Lavin followed with 15 points and Emily Johns had 12 points in the contest.
  • On boards, Lavin led the team with nine boards, and was only one rebound away from a double-double.
  • Freshman Lexi Salazar and Grace Koepke made their collegiate debuts in the season opener.
  • Salazar picked up her first collegiate points going 2-2 from the charity stripe and recorded five points overall in the game.
  • Longwood was led by Adriana Shipp-Davis with 15 points. The Lancers had two other players in double digits, Janay Turner with 13 and Anne-Hamilton Leroy with 11 points. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Stack secured the tip but American was unable to complete the play. The Eagles' first points of the game came from Anna LeMaster from behind the arc in the first four minutes of play.
  • The Eagles went on a 9-1 run to start the second quarter. DeRubbo's third three-pointer of the half helped the Eagles take the lead in quarter.
  • LeMaster was fouled on the play hitting a jumper and completed the three-point play. Hustling back on defensive she secured the defensive board and dished the ball to Henning who found Johns for the layup and to give American a seven-point lead, 29-22.
  • The Eagles went on a 13-2 run in the last five minutes of the quarter to end half with an eleven-point lead, 37-26. The team went 6-11 from three-point range in the half.
  • Coming out of the break, the Lancers picked up the first two points of the half, but where quickly stopped in their tracks with a block from Ivy Bales.
  • The Eagles re-asserted their offensive dominance in the third quarter picking up five offensive rebounds to continue to hold a decisive 11-point lead.
  • Longwood picked up some momentum in the middle of the final quarter going on a 5-0 run, but it was snapped by DeRubbo's seventh three-pointer of the game.
  • In the final ten seconds of the game Longwood was given a technical foul and sent Salazar to the line to pick up two free throws and her first colligate points. She closed the game by downing a three pointer with two seconds left on the clock. 
UP NEXT
The Eagles will be on the road for their next three games. On Saturday, Nov. 11, the team will take on La Salle at noon. Then they'll be back in D.C., but away to take on George Washington in a crosstown rivalry matchup at 6 p.m. in the Charles E. Smith Center.
