WASHINGTON – Despite a strong offensive push from forwards
Emily Johns and
Lauren Stack who scored 18 points and 12 points in the second half alone, the American University women's basketball team was unable to overtake La Salle on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles fell 53-62 to the Explorers in their first road contest of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Two Eagles finished the game with double-digit scoring. Johns led for the afternoon with 22 points and Stack followed with 16 of her own.
- Johns, though, finished the contest in dangerous territory with four fouls.
- On the glass, Anna LeMaster, Ivy Bales, and Stack finished all finished with seven rebounds. Stack also notched three steals, Bales and Johns each had two.
- After sinking 11 triples in the opening game against Longwood, the Eagles went 2-19 from beyond the arc against La Salle, unable to find their rhythm from distance.
- The Explorers were led by Nicole Melious with 22 points. Melious was the only player for the home team in double digits. La Salle, on the glass, was led by Gabby Turco with 10 rebounds: the only Explorer with double-digit rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Fifth year forward Stack won the tip for American and within 15 seconds, Johns knocked down the first bucket of the game.
- La Salle ended the first period up by five points, a score line of 12-7, over the Eagles. The Explorers held the narrow 16-14 edge in rebounds by the end of the first.
- The Eagles were getting shots up, but only went 5-27 from the field in the first half of the game.
- Molly Lavin, Stack and Johns were all leading the team with four points apiece at the break. The only other Eagle with points to their stat line was Bales. Heading into the locker room, Lavin led the team with five rebounds.
- American leveled the game 12-all with 6:23 left in the first half, but La Salle ended the second period with a 17-4 run over the last nine minutes of the frame to take the 29-14 lead over the Eagles into halftime.
- Coming out of halftime, Stack scored two layups back-to-back to reduce the Explorers lead to 11 before Johns scored two free throws bring the La Salle lead down to single digits; the Eagles went on an 6-0 run to open the half.
- The Explorers responded to the AU opening run by going on a 7-2 run themselves and canceling it out, leading 36-22 at the midway point of the third period.
- American went on an 11-5 run to open the fourth period, cutting the deficit to just six, down 42-48 with five points from LeMaster, four from Stack, and two from Bales.
- Despite the pushback, the Eagles were unable to outpace the Explorers and ended up dropping their first road contest 53-62.
