Volleyball Sweeps Holy Cross for its Sixth Straight Victory

WASHINGTON - The sixth win in a row for American University volleyball was a home sweep of Holy Cross by scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-16. The Eagles, now 10-4 in the Patriot League, have not lost since October 13 and are now tied for second in the PL standings with the team they'll face on Saturday, Army West Point.

By the Numbers
  • Graduate student Zeynep Uzen led all players with 16 kills, and sophomore Adelina Berisha added 11.
  • The Eagles got some big plays out of freshman Carly Sciborski who knocked down seven kills on 15 attempts with only one error, hitting .400 and also tying freshman Kaitlyn Evans for the team lead with three blocks.
  • Junior Esma Sipahi passed 1,000 assists for the season, getting 33 tonight and making it a double-double with 11 digs.
  • For the fourth straight match and seventh time this season, junior Bridget Javitch hit 20 total digs, but it was her first 20+ dig three-set match since the season opener against GW.
Notable
  • Holy Cross hit under .100 in all three sets, while American got better each set. The Eagles hit .167 in the first, .281 in the second and .317 in the third with 15 kills and only two errors.
  • AU had a 21-13 lead in the first set before the Crusaders cut the deficit in half, but they didn't do so until 24-20 and the set ended on a block for Carlie Fikse and Uzen for the 25-20 win.
  • The Eagles needed a big comeback themselves in the second set, down 17-12 before a 6-0 run put them in the lead for good.
  • Another big run in the third set, this time 7-1, put AU up 21-13 and left no doubt.
  • The Eagles got two kills from Fikse and one each from Uzen and Sipahi in a 4-0 run to close out the match.
Next Up
  • It's Alumnae Weekend for the Eagles, who welcome back all alums and specifically celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2013 Sweet 16 team on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. against Army.
