WASHINGTON - After taking a 2-0 lead, the momentum shifted away from American University volleyball and the Eagles ultimately suffered a five-set loss to Army West Point at home in Bender Arena. It snaps a six-match win streak for the Eagles, who are now locked into finishing third or fourth in the Patriot League and hosting a quarterfinal match on November 14.
Prior to that, American will host Bucknell for Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 4 p.m.
By the Numbers
- Both Zeynep Uzen and Esma Sipahi finished with double-doubles for American, with Sipahi coming as close to a triple-double as ever. She added a career-high eight blocks to 44 assists and 11 digs.
- Uzen totaled 14 kills and 15 digs, and moved into third place all-time in career kills at AU, now with 1,673. That total also ranks her fourth all-time in the Patriot League.
- Freshman Carly Sciborski posted a team-high 15 kills and hit an impressive .412 with only one error on 34 attempts.
- Leading AU in digs was Bridget Javitch with 22, while Maya Mrus also finished in double figures in digs with 11.
- Carlie Fikse added seven blocks to six kills, and Lilou Stegeman hit .44 with 10 kills while also putting up four blocks.
Notable
- Not surprisingly, the Eagles' best two hitting performances came in the first two sets as they posted percentage of .342 with 17 kills and .268 with 15 kills.
- AU won both of the first two sets by scores of 25-20, and led from the first point in both.
- Half of Stegeman's 10 kills came in the opening set including the set-winner.
- There were nine ties and five lead changes in the third set, but after a final tie at 17-all, the Black Knights used a 3-0 run to take the lead for good.
- The fourth set was a nail-biter with AU fighting off two set points before an error gave it to Army, 25-23.
- Army was the aggressor early in the fifth set and never trailed. The Eagles came back from a 5-1 deficit to get within one, but a 4-0 run put Army up 10-5 and the Black Knights kept control from there with only a single attack error in the set.
Next Up
