Hershey’s Two-Goal Performance Helps Men’s Soccer to a Draw at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – After Lafayette netted two goals in the first half, it was junior Sam Hershey who scored both of American's goals on Saturday to lead the Eagles to a 2-2 draw. Hershey's multi-goal game marked his first as an Eagle, helping American University men's soccer earn a point in the Patriot League standings.  
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Hershey now has four career goals and has scored at least one goal in the Eagles' last two games.
  • Junior Zemi Rodriguez and junior Taku Takahashi each recorded an assist in the game. For Rodriguez it was his second assist of the season, and for Takahashi it was his third of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lafayette found the back of the net first in the 27th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Just four minutes later, the Leopards took a two-goal lead off a penalty kick that found its way through the hands of sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts.  
  • Hershey scored his first goal of the day for the Eagles with just seconds to play in the first half to put the score at 2-1 heading into halftime.
  • The Eagles' offense carried over the momentum from Hershey's goal into the second half as they continued to break through the Leopards' defense.
  • Senior Evan Schweickert looked as if he was going to net the equalizer for American in the 64th minute, but his shot went just over the top of the net.
  • Hershey eventually did find the equalizer for the Eagles with less than 10 minutes to play in the game.
  • A free kick awarded to Lafayette in the final minute gave the Leopards a final chance to secure the win, but they were unable to convert their opportunity to a goal as the game ended in a draw.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Lafayette held the 10-6 shot advantage in the game as well as the shots on goal advantage, 6-2.
  • Six yellow cards were handed out in the game, four to Lafayette and two to American.
  • Hershey led the Eagles with three shots, with two being on goal.
  • Tibbetts made four saves in the game.

  • American remains on the road on Tuesday, Oct. 10 for a non-conference game against NC State.
