Men’s Soccer Defeats ACC Foe NC State Tuesday Night

RALEIGH, N.C. – It was second-half goals from juniors Mustapha Sowe and Sam Hershey that helped lifted American University men's soccer to victory over NC State Tuesday night. The win, the Eagles' first win over an ACC opponent since 2015, was the team's final non-conference game of the season.  
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Senior Lorenzo Gordon made his first start of the season in goal.
  • Freshman Jared Weber made his collegiate debut in Tuesday's game, seeing 40 minutes of action.
  • Sowe's goal was his first of the season and the second of his career.
  • Hershey's goal was his fifth of the season.  
  • The Eagles' win was the program's first win against an ACC opponent since 2015, when they beat No. 19 Virginia 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Ethan Boyle took American's first shot of the game in the 23rd minute, but his shot went just over the top of the goal to keep the game scoreless.
  • Hershey and sophomore Troy Elgersma followed Boyle's shot with shots of their own, but both also just missed the mark.
  • Neither of NC State's two shots in the first half could find the back of the net, as the game headed into halftime tied 0-0.
  • Sowe found the back of the net in the 49th minute for the Eagles to put them up 1-0.
  • 15 minutes later, in the 64th minute, it was Hershey who added an insurance goal for the Eagles, giving them a 2-0 lead.
  • NC State scored its lone goal of the game in the 71st minute.
  • Neither side could find the back of the net again, giving American the 2-1 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • American just outshot NC State, 9-8, taking three shots in the first half and six in the second.
  • Three yellow cards were handed out in the game, two to the Wolfpack and one to the Eagles.
  • Gordon made three saves in goal.
  • Both teams had four corners attempts in the game.
  • American committed just two fouls while NC State committed nine.
  • Boyle, Elgersma, and Hershey led the team with two shots each.
