Taku Takahashi Nets First Goal in Men’s Soccer’s Loss to Colgate

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On a rainy Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field, the American University men's soccer team faced off with Colgate University, ultimately falling 2-1 to the visiting Raiders. The Eagles lone goal-scorer was junior defender Taku Takahashi.

QUICK NOTEABLES
  • Senior Lorenzo Gordan made his first appearance in Patriot League play and his second consecutive start in goal.
  • Takahashi opened the scoring in the game when he tallied his first collegiate goal in the 25th minute.
  • Senior Robbie Matei's assist on Takahashi's goal is his second of the season, the first having come in the game against VCU on September 1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the seventh minute, senior Ethan Boyle took the first shot of the game for the Eagles, but the ball went high, over the top right of the goal.
  • It would be Mattei who navigated through the Raider's defense to cross the ball to an open Takahashi. Takahashi made no mistakes when he buried the ball into the top right corner in the 25th minute to put the Eagles up 1-0 over the visitors.
  • Not long later though, in the 33rd minute, Colgate found the back of the net in a mirror of AU's goal with the ball sailing into the top right corner and out of the reach of goalkeeper Lorenzo Gordon to even the score 1-all.
  • With slippery conditions, a pass back to the keeper led to an own goal by Copper Nunn in the 54th minute and the Raiders took a 2-1 lead early in the second half.
  • The Raiders would have two set pieces on which Gordon made two important saves to prevent Colgate from adding to their lead.
  • The Eagles, looking to even the score, out shot the Raiders in the second half 7-4, but were unable to put one away and the game finished with Colgate claiming the 2-1 victory over American.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eagles' goalkeeper Gordon recorded four saves in the game.
  • American out-shot Colgate 11-8, but the Raiders' aim was more precise, taking five shots on frame to the Eagles' four.
  • Four yellow cards were issued in the contest in an even split amongst the teams, two handed down to the Raiders and two to the Eagles.
  • On corners, American took five to Colgate's three, but was unable to capitalize.
