Boyle’s First-Half Goal Lifts Men’s Soccer Over Navy

WASHINGTON – It was a lone first-half goal from senior Ethan Boyle that pushed American University men's soccer past Navy Wednesday afternoon at Reeves Field. Boyle's game-winner was his fifth of the season while sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts picked up his first career clean sheet.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Boyle's goal now ties him with junior Sam Hershey for the team lead. It was Boyle's tenth goal of his career.
  • On Boyle's goal, sophomore Troy Elgersma tallied his third assist of the season. He is now the Eagles co-leader in the category for the season alongside junior Taku Takahashi.
  • The win marks American's first win over Navy since the 2021 Patriot League Semifinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Troy Elgersma had the first scoring opportunity of the afternoon, sending a shot wide right from the edge of the box in the 12th minute.
  • AU took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute when Boyle directed a close shot past the Navy goalkeeper after being set up off a pass from Elgersma.
  • The Eagles controlled the pace of the game for the entire first half, not allowing Navy to get a single shot while recording five of their own.
  • It was again Elgersma in the 56th with the first shot, this time on goal, for the Eagles in the second half. The shot was saved by Navy's goalkeeper.
  • Navy put pressure on American in the final minutes, but the Eagles hung strong on defense to come away with the victory.
